British Trust for Ornithology: Birds Science People; it is a powerful combination – will you be part of it?
BTO helps to secure the future for birds and nature, using our science, monitoring and data to inform good environmental decisions, inspiring others with the wonder of birds and empowering them to work with us. Our priority is to make a positive impact for birds, using our strong and objective science in partnership with others. We strive to work sustainably and to welcome everyone.
Our values
We are evidence-led, inclusive, collaborative, and empowering.
At BTO, you’ll join a dynamic and collaborative team where innovation, growth, and work-life balance are at the core of everything we do. We offer meaningful career development, a supportive culture, and the opportunity to make a real impact - every day.
At BTO, making a difference goes beyond the workplace. From volunteering in our communities to contributing to impactful projects and initiatives, there are plenty of ways to get involved and give back. Join us in creating positive change together.
Volunteer for a project
Love birds? Help us monitor the UK’s birdlife by joining one of our surveys - no experience needed! Some take just minutes a week. New to it all? Start with BirdTrack, Garden BirdWatch or Nesting Neighbours. Want more of a challenge? Try the Wetland Bird Survey, Breeding Bird Survey or Ringing. We’ve got training to help you grow, too!
BTO Youth
Are you a young nature enthusiast looking to make a difference? BTO Youth is all about helping young people get involved in bird science, conservation, and the natural world. Whether you're just starting out or already have some experience, there are loads of ways to take part. From fun, beginner-friendly surveys to hands-on fieldwork. You’ll gain skills, meet like-minded people, and become part of a growing community passionate about birds and the environment.
Other Opportunities
We offer a range of opportunities beyond volunteering, including PhD research projects, internships, and work experience placements. Whether you're exploring career options or developing your academic path, these are great ways to build skills, gain insight into conservation science, and contribute to our work monitoring and protecting birds.
Hear from our team what it's like to work at BTO
“The Disability Confident scheme ends at the interview stage, but BTO’s commitment to inclusivity does not! From the moment I was offered the job, and throughout my first couple of months in the role to now, I have been fully supported to do my job in the way that I work best, and been welcomed as part of the team. I can honestly say that BTO is the most supportive organisation I’ve ever worked for, and I hope this blog gives more disabled people the confidence to apply to join our lovely team.”
